A bush cricket
I didn't realize that this is a cricket - the colour fooled me - until someone pointed it out (thanks Jenny S.). The plant it's perched on is a Variegated Pittosporum, also known as Lemonwood or Tarata (the Maori name).

Skinks
the summer has brought out the skinks, which like to run along the veranda amongst the pot-plants and into the veranda garden beds. The plant is a Spider-plant (Chlorophytum comosum) and it's over 60 years old, having been bought by my grandmother in the late 1940s.

Purple Loosestrife
This is one of very few species that are native to both Europe and Australia - without occurring in many of the countries in between. Extremely unusual.

A possum's midnight feast
One of the resident Ring-Tail Possums eating pittosporum leaves late at night. I must try to get some better pics.
